Shayne “The Pain” headlines VIP bill at Colne Municipal Hall
By Jamie Albrecht

Promoter Steve Wood will undoubtedly be pleased with his ultimate effort to save the incident stricken Municipal Hall show at Colne, which is to now take place on Friday 8th October.
The show was to originally take place on Friday, 27th September, but an eye injury to Stuart McFadyen called a halt to proceedings and sadly also ended “The Burnley Banger’s” developing boxing career.

Events such as this, as well as the exit of Welterweight Chris O’Brien from proceedings after sustaining a broken hand must have equalled a headache for the VIP matchmakers. On the upside, it has allowed this Friday’s event to become a showcase for the younger talent on their books, and they will take every opportunity given to them to impress.

At the top of bill Friday evening will be fledgling Light-Welterweight Shayne “The Pain” Singleton (5-0-0, 2 KO’s) in action against Devon’s Ali Wyatt (4-13-2, 4 KO’s). The contest will be Shayne’s first foray into 6 round territory, and as the local fighter topping the bill, he will be keen to be at his best, which he emphasised when asked to comment; “I’m over the moon about being top of the bill at Colne, it is something I’ve always wanted, with it being my home town, and I definitely believe it will bring out the best in me as I want to look good for the home fans”.
As far as training for his first 6 round contest is concerned, Shayne has increased his training performance in the gym to be sure that he covers the distance effectively. He stated that “As it’s my first 6 round fight, the biggest change I have made in terms of upping my performance in training is to do with sparring…I am now sparring 10 rounds to be sure that I can easily cover the 6 round distance on the night”.

Having looked at Wyatt’s record, Singleton must also realise that this assignment is not as easy as it looks, a point the Colne man acknowledges; “Wyatt’s boxed at international masters level and although he lost, I know this means he has the experience of being at a higher level, so have got to keep that in mind”.

Despite the note of caution, Shayne was confident in predicting the points win; “I want to get some rounds in the bank and mainly concentrate on my boxing…I like to have a fight in the gym and my trainer isn’t keen on this, as he says I should only have a tear up when it’s really necessary. As the level of opposition increases, boxing will be more important than looking to go all out”.

In addition to the main event, a number of other prospects will be looking to increase their win ratios. Exciting Heywood Bantamweight Kieran Farrell will clash with the considerably bigger Daniel Thorpe, whilst Super-Bantamweight Mike Robinson fills the void left by Stuart McFadyen when he fights Shaun Doherty. Wayne Bennett will face off against Nuneaton’s kristian Laight in a Welterweight encounter and Steve Harkin fights Bobby Wood at Super-Middleweight.

Tickets for the “Showcase” bill at Colne Municipal Hall on Friday the 8th October are priced at £30.00. Tickets bought for the 27th September date remain valid.

Karl Place- Long Overdue

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Karl Place- Long Overdue, September 17th Manchester Velodrome
By Jamie Albrecht

Clayton’s own fighting pride Karl Place will be looking to extend his impressive unbeaten campaign to the ring when he faces Mauritius’ Michael Frontin in what will be his first outing at Light-Welterweight, he intends to drop back down in weight after this one.

Karl has been very impressive in the run up to his latest confrontation, stopping the extremely game lightweight Steve Saville in 2 rounds (aired on SKY TV). The fight looked to be a difficult assignment for Place from the off, with Saville looking to rush in and pressurise with the primary intention of unsettling his man. When questioned over the effectiveness of this strategy, Place appeared unfazed; “If an opponent wants to rush in like that, I prefer it because it means he is making a fight of it and it entertains the fans”. Such an attitude will no doubt endear him to the boxing faithful as his career develops further.

When asked about the strategy for his next fight, Place expressed a confidence that he would come out on top. The 32 year old Frontin’s record does not overly suggest a tough night for Place, with only 2 wins on his ledger, but the home fighter remains cautious, “We know he has beaten some good lads like Ben Murphy (who at the time was an undefeated hot prospect) but we have a game-plan all worked out for him, so as long as I can stick to that I should come out with the win”.

Top prospect Karl also expressed a desire to get some rounds under his belt, and did seem to be overly concerned with getting the knock-out victory; “when your boxing in front of the SKY cameras, there’s always the pressure of getting the knockout and ending it early, because you want to put on a show good enough to get you noticed, whereas otherwise I can just settle down and get the rounds and experience I need to test myself”.

With Karl moving up in weight for this contest, the biggest question will surely centre on whether he can retain the considerable power that has brought him 5 KO victories in his 8 undefeated battles at Light-weight. This doesn’t look to be a serious worry though, as place is tall for lightweight (at 5”11) so should be able to carry the power up to a higher weight fairly easily.

Of course only time will tell with this particular point and the next chapter of Karl Place’s rising career, to be seen at the Manchester Velodrome on Friday, September 17th will go some way towards providing the answer.

Tickets for the “Long Overdue” VIP promotions show at the Manchester Velodrome on Friday, September 17th are priced at £30 (General Admission) and £50 (Ringside) Tickets available from WWW.VIPBE.CO.UK. Doors open at 7.00pm, boxing commences 7.30pm
