COLNE SHOW NOW THE 8th OCTOBER 2010 – Due to pull outs and other issues this Friday evenings show has been put back for 2 weeks , people can just use the same tickets for the event. We apologize for any inconveniences put assure you this change is to ensure the event will be value for money.

KIERAN FARRELL – Fresh from a victory last Friday and now with the hunger back will be added to the Colne show.

CARL DILKS – Talked a good fight for his opportunity against James Degale but was not allowed to have one when referee Howard Foster stopped the contest with 6 seconds on the 1st round left. Carl had not had a good round but was not hurt at anytime and although against the ropes under attack not one of the flurry of punches had got through and the premature stoppage made it an easy win for the golden boy. Degale was always going to be quick in the early rounds for Carl and the plan was to get passed the fourth round and then really take it to him and test his fitness and durability – everyone in team Dilks is disappointed that we never got the chance to find out what Degale is made of and indeed it must seem like a shallow victory for James.

VELEDROME 17TH SEPTEMBER 2010 – This turned into a cracking event and a full report on the 10 fights are available on www.vipboxing.com

Long Overdue – Full Fight Report

“Long Overdue” delivers punch perfect showing from the VIP boxing stable
By Jamie Albrecht

The occasion broadcast did an extremely good service in meeting the level of anticipation present within the walls of the Manchester Velodrome on Friday 17th September. Boxing promoter Steve Wood offered Manchester fight fans a showcase in local boxing talent that did much to reassure fight fans that the temporary void left in the North-West boxing scene by the inactivity of British boxing great Ricky Hatton between the ropes could well soon be filled by a number of capable candidates. The bill offered 10 highly entertaining clashes that offered something for every fight goer’s taste in boxing strategy.

First to appear was VIP Boxing’s newest addition, Martin Grainger in a 4 round Cruiserweight contest. The fight with John Anthony offered a chance to get a recently shaky career back on the right track following 2 previous losses at Heavyweight. The Heywood man began steadily, employing a solid jab to support his work, which came in bursts as he backed Anthony up to the ropes late on. The fight was also a good display of the right hand from Grainger, who at times looked as though he was incapable of missing with it throughout the 2nd. The final 2 rounds saw Anthony rush at Grainger in a seemingly desperate attempt to upset the balance of the fight. Grainger remained calm however, and at times it looked as if he could stop Anthony, whose only real offer of resistance came via body shots. Overall, the fight was a performance Grainger and his support could be proud of. He looked much better and more comfortable at Cruiser, and the right matchups could rebuild his confidence and rejuvenate his recently shaky career. Final result: Martyn Grainger, Points win over 4 rounds

Warren Tansey was next up against James Tucker, giving the fans an uncharacteristic points win, contrary to his growing reputation as a fight- stopping puncher. Tansey fought well from the off, starting with a headhunting approach suggesting a desire to end the fight early. This strategy looked as though it would indeed pay handsomely, as Tucker looked to hold on and survive as from as early as the 2nd. The contest continued in much the same vein with Tansey using an intelligent, stiff jab to set up uppercuts and other effective work through the middle of Tucker’s guard. A change was noted in the fifth, with Tucker surely realising that only a KO victory would suffice. He began to up his work rate considerably, trading shots and pressuring Tansey whilst somewhat neglecting his previous survival tactics for a more gung-ho style, Despite this, It was clear that the cuter early work for Tansey clinched him the solid points victory and gave him the much needed experience of an over the distance win under his belt. Final result- Warren Tansey, Points win over 6 rounds

A rising member of the well regarded Quigley boxing brood also saw action on Friday evening. Nick Quigley faced off against Midlander Kevin McCauley in an entertaining 4 round bout. Quigley used a good range of shots to get the win, after a fast start that showed a good understanding of movement within the ring and a willingness to take shots to land his own work. The 2nd round was probably the most competitive of the 4, with both men fighting back and forth, with Quigley maybe edging the period because of a high work rate combined with a range of punches to the head as well as the body. The body work continued into the last round, as Quigley found room to land to the ribcage as he repeatedly looked to corner McCauley. The aggression on show from the 21 year-old Liverpudlian was definitely a positive to take from his win, although a concern may arise when that aggression draws him into a fight (as with the 2nd) where defence is not deemed a priority. This is only a minor point though, and a willingness to put on an exciting aggressive performance over a cautious one reigns supreme with a young fighter more often than not. Quigley’s youth and fire shone through in the contest. After adding to his perfect 5-0 record, Quigley showed fans that he is indeed an exciting addition to the Liverpool boxing scene, and things can surely only get better when it comes to the career prospects such a young and talented boxer. Final result: Nick Quigley, points win over 4 rounds.

Brian Rose’s fight with Terry Carruthers followed the Quigley clash. Rose will have been very pleased with the performance he put forth on Friday and may even be looking to a rematch with former conqueror Max Maxwell as a result of gaining personal redemption against Carruthers. Rose began with his hands held high in an understandably cautious manner, winning the opener with a good jab and not much in return from Carruthers. A higher output followed in the 2nd, with “The Lion” putting shots together well and throwing a few good combos. The only worry surfaced with a Carruthers right hand, but luckily, the heavy shot landed on the gloves, much to the relief of the Blackpool support. Carruthers had his best round in the 3rd, introducing inside fighting to the contest, rose remained calm throughout the exchanges however and did not allow any substantial work to penetrate his rib-hugging guard, which proved continuously effective and did not retract from the action despite being defensive in its reasoning. Rounds 4-6 saw Rose push Carruthers back repeatedly and resist the temptation to be drawn into an all out war. No shots were wasted, and Rose showed that he will not allow the loss to Maxwell to affect his confidence. A good display of balanced, controlled boxing eventually gave Brian Rose the win, to the delight of the Blackpool fans. It will be interesting to see the route he takes in order to return to domestic light-middleweight title contention. Final result: Brian Rose, points win over 6 rounds

Light Welterweight hot prospect Karl Place delivered the first win inside the distance on Friday night, stopping the outgunned Michael Frontin in 5 rounds, with a display that looked to be far beyond the level that his youth would suggest. Place started well, coming forward fast and dictating the pace with his eagerness and confident jab. The 2nd saw more body work focus for the Manchester fighter, as Frontin prevented the majority of headshots from landing with his slippery body movement and use of his gloves. With the body shots taking effect, place had his best round in the 3rd as he continued to highlight his strength advantage over Frontin with a display to head and body which ultimately took effect when Place connected with a heavy right hook to the head late on. With not much time to go in the round, Frontin was saved from further punishment by the bell, which gave him an opportunity to collect his thoughts and perhaps launch a desperate plan of action. The 5th saw the end for the Mauritius fighter. Weary and punch worn, he fell from a well timed Place right hook for an 8 count. After his opponent’s rise, Karl showed a remarkable patience. Rather than rushing in, he looked for the opening that would end proceedings and found it with another right hook late on. The referee jumped in to save Frontin and call time on the one sided fight. Following the win, Steve Wood commented happily that Karl is “surely pushing for a British title eliminator on that performance”, a remark that will surely add even more momentum to the speedy wagon of Karl Place’s early career and high confidence. When asked for his thoughts on the contest, Karl himself appeared elated; “I wanted to make sure that I stayed focused rather than rushing in and wasting my work and that definitely showed with the result”. Final result: Karl Place, TKO win in round 5

Kieran Farrell featured against the much bigger Jason Carr in a 6 round fight. Despite the visible disadvantages he suffered, Farrell looked to have the edge in strength as he bullied Carr from the outset. Excellent head movement in round 1 made Farrell an elusive target, and he landed with a heavy right hand that forced Carr to hold on until the bell. More of the same followed as Farrell ensured that the size advantage would play no part, staying close and eliminating the potential use of the reach advantage that Carr could of troubled Farrell with. Following the exhibition of impressive power and ring technique on display from the younger man, Farrell picked up the win at the expense of a clearly troubled and marked up Jason Carr. Final result: Kieran Farrell, points win over 6 rounds

Southpaw stylist Terry Flanagan also wowed ringside viewers with a solid TKO win over his Hungarian opponent in a scheduled 4 rounder. The 1st round saw Flanagan starting with the heavy artillery early. He showed an equal capability with both hands as he ensured that his opponent was made as uncomfortable as possible when cornered and hit solidly from the southpaw stance with right and left hands. The 2nd was just as unlucky for Kassi, as he was put on the canvas by a body shot. After taking the count, Flanagan rushed in with a furious flurry of punches, which subsequently forced the referee to call a halt to the action in the 2nd. The contest shows even more that Flanagan is growing into the weight and as a result is developing the power to upset his adversaries. Final result: Terry Flanagan, TKO win in 2 rounds.

The evening culminated in a fight for the Vacant International Masters Super-Featherweight championship between Ashton’s Jon “2 smokes” Kays and Welsh champion Dai Davies. The fight was fought on a very even keel for the most part, though Kays was able to change upset the equilibrium and eventually overcome Davies to win the fight and claim the title. The 1st round centred on the use of the jab to try and gain a measure of control in the centre of the ring. Nothing of note was landed in particular and the fight looked to be an evenly matched spectacle. The 2nd was more successful for Kays, who showed that he held the advantage when the fighting had fallen back to the ropes. Due to Kays pressing home this advantage, he took the 2nd, although he failed to make sure the action was not confined to this area, which ultimately of course, did not matter. The contest continued in the same fashion, with the majority of the action taking place in the middle of the ring, which benefited Davies more than Kays as both men appeared evenly matched in the boxing stakes. Kays clearly realised that Davies was struggling when forced to box from the ropes. His greatest successes came when doing this, and the shots he was able to detonate on Davies in consequence helped wear down the Welshman for the fateful 7th round.

When the 7th arrived, Kays was slightly ahead and it had become apparent that Davies was beginning to flag slightly, failing to stop Kays backing him up and exercising control. Kays ultimately made his man pay when he caught the Welshman with a beautiful overhand right over the top of the guard that sent his game opponent falling down for the count. With Davies rising to beat the count, his legs were still in a rubbery state, and Kays did not need to be told to put his boxing into 5th gear, he chased the weakened Davies, hitting him with a wave of hard shots before the referee took mercy on Davies, thus ending the fight and seeing a new champion installed. The vacant title place had been filled. It was a fitting end to a brilliant night of boxing for the boys at VIP Boxing Promotions that saw many prospects push on to hopefully achieve even bigger and better things. Final Result: Jon Kays TKO in round 7

STEPHEN JENNINGS – Moved to 5-0 with a third round KO victory over local favourite George Watson in Sunderland last Friday evening in what was a very good contest between friends who boxed for England together. Stephen has a small break planned but will be back in the gym soon and looking to continue showing his potential in the home corner next time out.

LEE JENNINGS – Looked like he was to follow his brother with a KO win when he dropped Kurt Godding at the end of the 1st round with Kurt not moving until the count reached 8. Godding made a remarkable recovery and after 2 more competitive rounds got a 4th round win when Lee was stopped looking exhausted , but in fact he was disorientated from punches and an elbow to the back of his head . Credit was due to both fighters in a very absorbing contest.

CARL DILKS – Attended last weeks press conference in London for his contest with James Degale and came away buzzing for the fight . James commented that Carl only throws 30 punches a round and we presumed he had watched the Adamu fight in fast forward , Dilksy took that 12 rounder on short notice and knows he will be a lot better this time for having that in the bag. Also it only takes 1 punch to change a contest !!.

Karl Place- Long Overdue

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Karl Place- Long Overdue, September 17th Manchester Velodrome
By Jamie Albrecht

Clayton’s own fighting pride Karl Place will be looking to extend his impressive unbeaten campaign to the ring when he faces Mauritius’ Michael Frontin in what will be his first outing at Light-Welterweight, he intends to drop back down in weight after this one.

Karl has been very impressive in the run up to his latest confrontation, stopping the extremely game lightweight Steve Saville in 2 rounds (aired on SKY TV). The fight looked to be a difficult assignment for Place from the off, with Saville looking to rush in and pressurise with the primary intention of unsettling his man. When questioned over the effectiveness of this strategy, Place appeared unfazed; “If an opponent wants to rush in like that, I prefer it because it means he is making a fight of it and it entertains the fans”. Such an attitude will no doubt endear him to the boxing faithful as his career develops further.

When asked about the strategy for his next fight, Place expressed a confidence that he would come out on top. The 32 year old Frontin’s record does not overly suggest a tough night for Place, with only 2 wins on his ledger, but the home fighter remains cautious, “We know he has beaten some good lads like Ben Murphy (who at the time was an undefeated hot prospect) but we have a game-plan all worked out for him, so as long as I can stick to that I should come out with the win”.

Top prospect Karl also expressed a desire to get some rounds under his belt, and did seem to be overly concerned with getting the knock-out victory; “when your boxing in front of the SKY cameras, there’s always the pressure of getting the knockout and ending it early, because you want to put on a show good enough to get you noticed, whereas otherwise I can just settle down and get the rounds and experience I need to test myself”.

With Karl moving up in weight for this contest, the biggest question will surely centre on whether he can retain the considerable power that has brought him 5 KO victories in his 8 undefeated battles at Light-weight. This doesn’t look to be a serious worry though, as place is tall for lightweight (at 5”11) so should be able to carry the power up to a higher weight fairly easily.

Of course only time will tell with this particular point and the next chapter of Karl Place’s rising career, to be seen at the Manchester Velodrome on Friday, September 17th will go some way towards providing the answer.

Tickets for the “Long Overdue” VIP promotions show at the Manchester Velodrome on Friday, September 17th are priced at £30 (General Admission) and £50 (Ringside) Tickets available from WWW.VIPBE.CO.UK. Doors open at 7.00pm, boxing commences 7.30pm

Warren Tansey – Long Overdue

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Warren Tansey – Long Overdue, September 17th, Manchester Velodrome
By Jamie Albrecht

Warren Tansey will surely be looking to knock out his fourth victim in as many fights and record another concussive win when he faces off against the well travelled James Tucker at the Manchester Velodrome’s Long Overdue bill on Friday, September 17th.

Despite losing his maiden professional fight, Tansey, who hails from Middleton, has ensured that the scorecards have not been an issue ever since. Following a points loss to Nottingham Super-Middleweight Paddy Ryan in September last year, no subsequent adversary has made it to the 4th round.

Such a turnaround could be viewed as a great example for perseverance. For many fighters, a debut loss is not the be all and end all, it is how they respond that counts and Tansey has responded in the most effective way possible for a fighter, with a stream of impressive KO’s. Tansey admitted that the loss to Ryan affected him; “Of course I was down-hearted, but you’ve got to pick yourself up and get on with it”.

When asked to comment on his remarkable recent form, Tansey heaped praise on current trainer Darren McCarrick, “Working with Darren has done me a lot of good, he knew me from the amateurs and working again with Darren has been brilliant and he’s helped me improve in a lot of areas, including my strength”.

This improvement in his strength has obviously been paying dividends, with Tansey pointing out that although he is a super-Middleweight operator, some of his opposition have been natural Light- Heavyweights, including his next rival, James Tucker, which shows just how potent the Middleton man’s punch is.

An examination of Tucker’s record shows durability despite the heavy number of losses he has sustained (only 1 Knock-out loss from 27 defeats) so the upcoming contest should be a reliable indicator of Tansey’s power. Warren seemed totally confident on the issue, simply stating “I know he’s durable but I’ll be trying to stop him”.

Tickets for the “Long Overdue” VIP promotions show at the Manchester Velodrome on Friday, September 17th are priced at £30 (General Admission) and £50 (Ringside) Tickets available from WWW.VIPBE.CO.UK

Martyn Grainger – Long overdue

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Martyn Grainger – Long overdue, September 17th Manchester Velodrome
By Jamie Albrecht

For Heywood Cruiserweight Martyn Grainger, the road on which his boxing career travels along has been littered with many hazards. The latest of these came in a losing effort to 2008 Olympian David Price in a contest that could be said to have arrived somewhat prematurely for a developing fighter who has only boxed in 5 professional bouts previously and whose natural weight is the much lighter cruiserweight limit.

With such a thought in mind, it is probably safe to assume that a win for Grainger against hard punching Yorkshire-man John Anthony on the Long Overdue undercard at the Manchester Velodrome on September 17th carries with it the weight of redemption, as Grainger looks to make his first night under Steve Wood’s VIP promotions banner a successful one.

Grainger, who was previously managed by Salford trainer Oliver Harrison, stated that his move to the VIP boxing stable was motivated in part by his two previous losses; he was quick to express his admiration for the Oliver’s Gym boss as a trainer despite the switch; “No disrespect to Oliver at all, he’s a good trainer, you only have to look at what he’s done for a fighter like (former EBU Light-Middleweight champion) Jamie Moore to see that. I just feel I was matched to soon against people like David Price, which I feel I wasn’t ready for”.

A fight at cruiserweight, which is what the Anthony fight represents for Grainger, will be a welcome relief for the fighter who as a heavyweight, clearly struggled with the weight advantaged he was giving away to a much larger man like Price as well as a combination of ability and experience. He attributes much of the recent trouble he has had in the ring to over matching. He felt that “I shouldn’t have even been in the ring with Price as I’m a cruiserweight naturally and also not ready to operate at that level”.
When asked about the Anthony fight next Friday night, Grainger remained optimistic that he can get the win and get his career back on track in its early stages. “I know he’s got power (5 KO’s from 7 wins) but I feel my speed will be too much for him, I know I’m quicker and I think that’ll help me beat him”.

In terms of his recent affiliation with VIP, Grainger commented that this could be “the way forward” for his career and it will hopefully signal a change in form for the better, allowing him to relax and effectively go about his boxing against suitable opposition. John Anthony is the springboard to redemption and a hopefully invigorated cruiserweight in Martyn Grainger will take the chance with both fists.

Kays -V- Davies to receive ITV exposure

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Kays – Davies to receive ITV exposure, September 17th Manchester Velodrome
By Jamie Albrecht

It can certainly be said to be the case that television exposure can benefit a fighter whose career is on the rise. For Super-Featherweight stylists John Kays and Dai Davies, such an experience is on the horizon, as ITV Wales are keen to publicise their upcoming September 17th International Masters title clash at the Manchester Velodrome.

It is understandable that the attention will be with Davies for the most part, as the fighter will be subject to a documentary programme highlighting the evening’s main event, including the Welshman’s preparations for the clash and his resultant post-fight reaction.

For Kays, such an opportunity to perform for the television audience will no doubt be relished as an added platform upon which the man from Ashton can positively shine and perhaps send out a warning to the big names at domestic level, such as British Super-featherweight Gary Sykes, who currently enjoys an undefeated record of 16-0 as a professional. A chance to perform in front of the media, whether national regionally or nationally, is a chance that should be used to its’ full potential by both boxers and they will surely know this.

What promises to be an exciting night of boxing at the Manchester Velodrome on the 17th September has therefore been given an added dimension. Kays is the man closer to home, but Davies will have the added comfort and motivation that he is still performing in front of the home crowd, which ensures that he will be ready to give his all, which is something that Kays is indeed hoping for. In a recent interview, Kays explained that he hopes Davies will bring the fight to him as “It will bring out the best (in me) and make it an exciting fight for the fans”. If all goes to plan, this event could be a memorable one, with a degree of public recognition at stake as well as a championship belt, the night looks to offer a sizeable incentive to put on a show and grab the much needed victory.

————

The fight also features a great 9 fight undercard, with tickets priced at £30.00 and £50.00 – available from all boxers and ww.vipbe.co.uk
